ALT Rewind: Underneath It All by No Doubt

Written by

Today in Alt Rewind we played No Doubt’s “Underneath It All” from their 2001 album Rock Steady. It features DJ Lady Saw, who in 2003 because the first female DJ to win a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

Gwen Stefani wrote that song with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, and she actually pulled out a journal she kept after one of her dates with her soon-to-be husband and lead singer of Bush, Gavin Rossdale. In that journal, she wrote that after everything they had been through, she still loved him and though he had the rough rock n’ roll exterior he was just lovely “underneath it all”

And seeing that she dated her bass player Tony Kanal for several years prior to this, it is such a power move to then make him play the song she wrote for her new boyfriend. Go WOMEN go (It's still our month, people)!

Carrie Danger goes to John Mayer

Written by

As many of you know John Mayer played a Solo & Acoustic show at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse on Saturday night and I had the pleasure of going to see him sing to the hearts of so many.

The stage was very intimate with just John and his guitar, a piano to one side and a double neck acoustic to the other. He started off the 25 song set with 'Gravity' and the packed venue lit up! He worked his way through so many gems and had some videos from his past play intermittently, including his January 2002 interview for "Room for Squares".

As he moved to the piano he played 'You're Gonna Live Forever In Me' with a beautiful whistle solo. For someone who struggles to whistle, color me impressed. Not only can this man whistle like he is summoning every woman to fall harder for his sultry ways BUT he played a guitar WHILE playing the piano and singing 'Changing'. Clean up in section 207, row 6, seat 4... I melted.

From there he played the acoustic and lyrically blessed us with 'Slow Dancing in a Burning Room', 'Driftin', 'Your Body is a Wonderland' & 'Walt Grace's Submarine Test, January 1967'. The friend I took with me mentioned the lyrics "Cause when you're done with this world, you know the next is up to you" and that just hit different. Interesting how you can hear a song so many times and someone can hear things you might have missed. Thank you Taylor!

The double-neck acoustic portion was quite an experience. Of course he played 'Friend of the Devil' by Grateful Dead as he does tour with Dead & Company. (side note: I was supposed to see them then the world shut down so that was a treat for me. Dead Heads Unite!) He ended the setlist with 'Edge of Desire', perfect.

Let's not forget the encore where John gave us two more 'Stop This Train' and 'Born and Rasied'.

The evening was beautiful, the company was even better and John Mayer was great. Taking time to read signs, sing happy birthday and even tell little stories to the crowd of adoring fans.

If you were able to go to the show, I hope you enjoyed it just as much as I did!

Ahead of his sold out show at the Agora on March 10th, I got to sit down with the lead singer of Blue October, Justin Ferstenfeld for a quick chat before he had to run off to sound check. To set the scene, I, along with our P.D. Alyssa, and her mom were led to his green room where he welcomed us with hugs, some water, and a general earnesty you wouldn’t typically expect from a rockstar. He carried that same energy with him the whole night. Whether it was with fans at sound check or talking to people in the crowd in between songs, he spoke to everyone from the heart. It helped explain why, aside from liking the sounds of Blue October, people love (and I mean LOVE) Justin… and they have for decades.

You’ll hear Alyssa’s mom in the beginning mention her love for Blue October. Justin then goes on to call her “Mom” throughout the interview saying things like “sorry Mom” after he curses.

Throwback Thursday - Hawthorne Heights

Written by

Tonight we are touching on musical nostalgia and the beauty of listening to songs from our past.

What is nostalgia? According to the Oxford Dictionary Nostalgia is a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.

In honor of Hawthorne Heights playing at the House of Blues tomorrow (3/24) we are going to talk about a song so many of us elder emos love dearly...

"Ohio Is For Lovers" from their debut album 'The Silence in Black and White' released in 2004 after their name change from A Day in the Life.

This song truly does evoke so many emotions, taking us back to our blacked out eye makeup, racoon tail hair extentions and skinny jeans topped with studded belts... yes multiple belts IYKYK. Throw me a Nikon camera and watch me code my MySpace profile.

From Dayton, Ohio this band has been making music since 2001 and recently released their 7th album 'The Rain Just Follows Me' in 2021 and just this month released two singles, 'Lucerne Valley' & 'Dandelions'. The lastest album and singles ring true to their sound and feels just as good as your first pair of Etnies.

Below you can enjoy all the songs mentioned above! -CD

Everyone Needs A Third Place

Written by

So on a whim, I joined a bowling league thats hosted by our sister station, 97.5 WONE. A family friend had formed a team for the league but needed one more person! Even though I have never really bowled without bumpers or a pitcher of beer, I was surprised and honored to be asked.

I don’t think I realized it would be every Thursday for twelve weeks, but after the first week I was hooked! It’s a bunch of people of all bowling abilities that come together each week to make new friends, listen to some great music, maybe win some prizes, and of course to bowl. Tonight is week eleven and oh how the time has flown! It’s brought me so much joy and has reminded me of the importance of ‘third places’ something I first heard about reading an article in The Atlantic.

The term “third place” was coined in the 80s by sociologist Ray Oldenburg, and it basically refers to a “location other than work or home where here’s little to no financial barrier to entry and where conversation is the primary activity.” You see, your home is your first place, work is typically your second, and third places can be anything from a park, to a bar, to a library, to a gym, or even a bowling alley! They used to be much more common, but over the years, as costs have risen and more people spend their extra time in front of screen, third places have been slowly disappearing. It’s a problem because third places are crucial to our social development, general well-being, quality of life, and sense of community.

So, today I want you to ask yourself, “Do I have a third place?” and if you don’t try to find one! It’s difficult to find free things, but if stretch the “third place” rules a bit, you could test out a yoga class, maybe read a magazine at a new coffee shop, go for a walk in the park, join a book club, or better yet, join a bowling league. Soon I’ll be on the hunt for a new third place, so hopefully I’ll see you around. :)

Danger Zone - Arlo Parks & Beach Weather

Written by

Tonight in the Danger Zone I am featuring two songs that focus on growth and self awareness.

That's the beauty of music, you can be going through just about anything and find a song that really speaks to you and in some cases for you.

To start we have Arlo Parks, a young musician who is finding her footing through her 20's, is able to take these new experiences and turn it into something beautiful with her new single 'Weightless'. You can watch the video below. Arlo Parks will release her second studio album 'My Soft Machine' May 26th.

Wrapping the DZ we have Beach Weather with their latest single from their recently released album 'Pineapple Sunrise', the track is called 'Unlovable'.

“Unlovable” is honest, acknowledging the flaws that make someone hard to love and wishing for just the smallest bit of validation after feeling like a letdown.

When speaking on the album as a whole singer Nick Santino says, "

This whole record has themes of melancholy and loneliness while also feeling hopeful and optimistic for what's ahead. The concept of Pineapple Sunrise is rooted in the search for eternal happiness, mindfulness and being content with discovering and loving your inner self." You can listen to "Unloveable" below.

With the Cleveland International Film Festival kicking things off tonight March 22nd at Playhouse Square, I thought I’d reminisce a bit…

Every year growing up I would go with my dad to the Cleveland Film Festival (back when it was in Tower City) and make some of my best memories. One of these years, back in high school, my dad took me to the merch table where I got a shirt and a bumper magnet that read CLE FILM FEST. I had just gotten my license the year prior and was hoping the bumper magnet would give off the cool, manic-pixie-dream-watches-experimental-art-films-in-her-free-time-girl aesthetic I was going for in my teenage years. Little did I know, that bumper sticker was gonna do a lot more than that.

Sometime after I stuck the magnet to the back of my 2006 Nissan Rogue, I was late driving up 480 on my way to a tutoring gig in Parma. Although “allegedly” I was “speeding”. I get pulled over for the first time in my life. The highway patrol officer walks up to my window and tells me, “You were going pretty fast back there.” And I, most likely not knowing my rights, start apologizing basically admitting to it.

But the next thing I know, he points to the back of my car and says “So I see you have a Cleveland Film Festival sticker back there… you know this highway patrol thing is my day job, but my real dream is to be an actor.” He then goes on to list a few minor roles he’s had… even having a scene in a movie with Steve Carrell!

At this point, I realize he’s NOT aware that I am a 17-year-old going to tutor a 4th grader in math, but instead thinks I am someone with some kind of pull in the film industry. So I lean into it and act interested. He then pulls out a business card with his SAG membership info and his phone number on it. He hands it to me and says, “You know if you’re ever looking to cast someone like me, or have any other opportunities, give me a call”.

He let me off with a warning….

So the moral of the story: if you’re a white, attractive young lady with a Cleveland Film Festival Bumper Sticker, things might go your way.

Music & Mental Health

Written by

Hey guys, so tonight I thought I would touch on mental health and music. As we all know music is so good for the soul, if we are sad, happy and even indifferent.

Today I had my regular walk in this beautiful weather and even though I didn't have music playing (I like to listen to nature) there was a song in my heart that kept playing on repeat. THEN I was thinking about all the ways we can take care of ourselves. You can move your body in whatever way feels right, listen to your favorite music or new music you didn't know about, take a hot shower or bath. Even something that you might think isn't self care... cleaning your room, making your bed. I could go on for days but the point is take a moment to take care of yourself in whatever way feels right.

Take a deep breath, check your piechart and take care of yourself.

Here is the song that was stuck in my head and HEY we play it on our station! Download our free app and enjoy great music anytime, anywhere!

Alt Rewind: Stop! by Jane's Addiction

Written by

During today's ALT Rewind we played 'Stop!' by Janes Addiction. It was the lead single off their 1990 album, Ritual de lo Habitual. Founding member and lead singer, Parry Farrell, said he wrote the song after seeing a film called Koyaanisqatsi. It’s a 1982 experimental environmental documentary with no words, just a hypnotic musical composition from Phillip Glass. You can get a sense of the vibes in this film by just watching the clip below.

The documentary seemed to make such an impact on Farrell, that he wrote 'Stop!' about the ever-worsening environmental crisis and our society's general malaise that often surrounds the topic.

But on a more positive note, the music video is SICK and was filmed during a private outdoor performance at the Forest Preserve in Mt. Baldy, California.
