Carrie Danger goes to the Home Opener

Written by

So as we know Friday was the Cleveland Guardians Home Opener against the Seattle Mariners. Before we get into the game let’s talk about the Man, the Myth, the Legend… John Adams. Cleveland’s beloved drummer!

Born in Cleveland Oct. 9 1971, John played drums in the marching and jazz band and eventually became the President of the Cleveland Blues Society.

With nearly 4,000 games under his belt, 1 team name change, 3 stadium name changes. (Indians/Guardians & Municipal Stadium/The Jake/Progressive Field)

John and his drum were witness to postseason success, World Series heartbreak and the absolutely ridiculous Ten Cent Beer Night.

In a 2002 Cleveland Magazine interview he said “I march to the beat of my own drum and I think the spirit of Cleveland is the same.”

Big shout to the one and only Tom (aka DirtyTom on Twitter, he's not dirty) for my John Adams pin!

While at the game there was a very nice tribute to John who as you know passed at the age of 71 due to health complications on Jan. 30 2023. It was a touching moment when the crowd erupted in cheers and claps for the beloved drummer who kept the heartbeat of Cleveland alive even when the game was tight or not going our way.

Now this was my first home opener at the stadium and wow what a wonderful experience! The sun was shining and the spirits were high, the energy of Cleveland fans is contagious!

We don’t need to get into the big L that was the conclusion of the game… however, the Cleveland Guardians did win the season series against the Seattle Mariners, 4-3 in a walkoff win after a grueling 12 innings of back and forth ties!

Needless to say, I am very excited about this baseball season and hitting the stadium as many times as possible!

Go Guardians!

My breakup-anthem queen Melanie Martinez is coming to Cleveland!! And all week long I have your chance to win tickets to the show!

You may be familiar with the two-toned hair singer from her humble beginnings as a contestant on The Voice in 2012. After the show aired, she was signed to Atlantic Records, and in 2014 she released her debut single, “Dollhouse” following it up with her debut studio album, “Cry Baby” which went platinum in 2015. You’ve probably heard her song “Playdate” if you were scrolling on TikTok at any point this past summer.

I’d like to thank her for that debut studio album because it has gotten me through almost every single breakup/rejection/broken heart I’ve experienced since 2015. (For those new to her music, I recommend checking out “Pacify Her” “Recess” and "DEATH”- featured below)

Her third studio album PORTALS, also the name of her tour, just dropped on March 31st. It features a song, “EVIL” which she admitted to fans on Instagram is about “dealing with a narcissist who ironically calls you evil just because you're able to see through their bullshit.” Who was she with in her last relationship you ask? Quirky alternative artist, Oliver Tree. OHHHH THE DRAMA.

If you want to win tickets to her SOLD-OUT show at Jacob’s Pavilion on July 5th, tune in all week long around 11:30 AM, I’ll be telling you the keyword you need to text!

Throwback Thursday - Yellowcard

Written by

It’s Throwback Thursday! Tonight we are going to highlight Yellowcard!

Let’s get started, the band was formed in 1997 in Jacksonville, Florida. Their first album released in 1999 ‘Where We Stand’ had a lot harder punk sound than Ocean Avenue… I was unaware of this and let’s say it was unexpected but I LOVE IT!

Heavy on the baselines and very much Florida-Punk Rock with some hints of ska. Feels like I’m about to light up with my buds on the pier.  Some favs ‘Lesson Learned’, ‘Doesn’t Matter’ and ‘Uphill Both Ways’.

Then we see a BIG shift in the band’s sound, why? Well because they fired their first vocalist Ben Dobson and hired Ryan Key who we know today as their frontman. Taking the band from hardcore-punk to pop-punk.

2001 ‘One for the Kids’ it almost sounds like they fell in love and had their heart crushed. Here we see the band still holding onto their garage band guitar riffs however much more sing songy.

2003 we were all blessed with ‘Ocean Avenue’ and at this moment I can feel myself watching Laguna Beach and listening to it over and over in my 6 disc stereo system… silver and blue.

This was right before I was set to move to Ohio away from my childhood home and friends and LET ME TELL YOU… every song was FELT. 14 year old Carrie was big sad listening to “Empty Apartment” on repeat.

I could go on and on because this band has 10 studio albums but we will close here… for now!

As you know Yellowcard is touring their 20th Anniversary of Ocean Avenue and hitting Blossom Music Center with Story of the Year and This Wild Life Wednesday July 12th!

As always, thank you for reading! -Carrie Danger

Live In Studio with Girl Cologne

Written by

Wednesday I got to sit down with up-and-coming Cleveland band, Girl Cologne. They've released two singles, “Let Me Know” and “My Baby” and hope to release their next song "Help You Help Me" (which they performed live on the air) soon. Aside from a unique punk sound, they pride themselves on a dedication to social issues that effect the queer as well as the chronically ill community (HELL YEAH). Three of the four members--Jenna, Cade, and Parker (shoutout to Em who couldn't make it as they had to work their day job -- but hopefully not for much longer)--arrived at the station bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to show off their stuff. Besides that, I just had a great time hanging with them. Check out our conversation and their live acoustic performance below.

Roller Derby Part 3

Written by

Picking up where we left off… the sport had come to a halt so Seltzer sold the rights to the International Roller Derby League to Roller Games, another league based in LA. They lasted a few years longer even holding a bout at Madison Square Garden between the Tokyo Bombers and the Chiefs that drew a very large crowd but again by 1975 Roller Games had also gone by the wayside.

There were a few attempts to bring it back in the 80’s and 90’s but it wasn’t until 2001 when a group of women in Texas revived the sport. Women’s Flat Track Derby Association or W.F.T.D.A., has grown exponentially and there are currently 429 Member Leagues on 6 continents, according to wftda.com.

If you didn’t know we have the Burning River Roller Derby League right here in Cleveland. I can tell you from experience that team can SKATE! They are amazing to watch and learn from. If you live more in the Akron area you don’t have to drive very far as there is the Akron Roller Derby League in the Rubber City.

As for myself, it’s been 10 years since I’ve skated and let me tell you… it was such an incredible experience! I was lucky to learn and skate with the most amazing women I’ve ever met and will have a bond with till the end. Wherever life takes us, I know I have a great pack of sisters on my side! I could go on and on and share stories of some wild times BUT I will close this series.

Thank you so much for reading and coming along this journey with me! Below enjoy Joan Jett & The Black Hearts 'Bad Reputation' as that was a regular song in my head when I would skate. Also, Jim Croce 'Roller Derby Queen' as recommended by Cgma Guy.

Roller Derby Part 2

Written by

Picking up where we left off… In 1935 the first Transcontinental Derby took place with 20,000 people watching the action. Two-person teams, one man and one woman would skate 57,000 laps on a flat track. Totalling roughly 2,700 miles, on average a single marathon lasted 3 weeks.

Realizing that this is a bit repetitive, Seltzer and sportswriter Damon Runyon created the structure of roller derby.

So now the game has taken on rules and regulations and because I get asked this frequently… what are the rules?!

Here is a short video explaining, enjoy.

It’s a physical and mental game to say the least, you really have to be on your A game with eyes on the back of your head.

Once the sport had gained momentum and popularity, not only for the full contact, high drama that was portrayed on TV, think WWE with “feuds” that would last weeks for the viewers pleasure. But also for the equality that was very evident, in no other sport were men and women viewed as equals. Where women could be themselves fully and fans of all ages and genders flocked to their tv’s or the local tracks to cheer on their favorite teams and skaters.

In May 1973, 27,135 fans packed into Shea Stadium to watch the triple-header world championships, in which the Chiefs, led by Mike Gammon, defeated the Pioneers 34-31.

However the once beloved, intense sport came to a screeching halt with seemingly no reason.

Tomorrow we will dive into the revival of the sport!

Today's Alt Music News

Written by

In honor of National Hug a Newsperson Day, I am sharing with you some alternative news, and all I ask for in return is a virtual hug:

All-American Rejects Go All Around America (but not to Cleveland)

The All-American Rejects Announce their first headlining tour in 10 years! They’ve got a 27 dates for the “Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour” featuring The Get Up Kids, New Found Glory, Motion City Soundtrack and The Starting Line. And typically my ex would be in my head while I sing along to their song, “Gives You Hell” but today I am singing it directly to the band BECAUSE THEY AREN’T COMING TO OHIO FOR THE TOUR. The closest they’ll be coming to Cleveland is Indianapolis on August 24th, which is still driveable so I’ll stop my complaining now.

Foo Fighters To Headline Replica of 9:30 Club

It was just announced today that Foo Fighters will be headlining the opening night at the brand-new DC venue The Atlantis, which is a replica of the infamous 9:30 Club. It’s so small that it has a capacity of 450 people. And to celebrate the 44th year of the original space, they’ll be having a series of 44  different shows with 44 different headliners, and tickets selling for, you guessed it, 44 dollars. They’re also having shows with Billy Idol, The Pixies, Maggie Rogers, Portugal The Man, and so many more. Check out the lineup here

Roller Derby Part 1

Written by

Over the weekend I was able to attend a Roller Derby Fundraiser for a local young team named Crooked River Roller Derby, a team comprised of 7-17 year olds who love to skate! I asked the skater (Panic Attack) I was there to support their go to song to get pumped for her bouts and she said “I like anything from the Gorillaz or ‘No Role Modelz’ by J. Cole

So as I was inspired by the youth and feeling nostalgic for my quad skating days, I thought we could look into the amazing sport!

I did roller derby for a brief time in my early 20’s and my name was ‘High Carly #420’ and then ‘Mojo Risin’ #420’. Inspired by The Doors 'L.A. Woman'.

Now let’s look at a very brief history of Roller Derby. The man credited for creating the sport, Leo Seltzer, saw an opportunity after realizing that 90% of Americans have tried roller skating at some point in their lives.  So in 1935 roller derby was born at a Chicago Coliseum.

Tomorrow I'm going to dive into a deeper look at the history and creation of the rules and regulations and yes... I'll attach a video that explains it!

In the meantime here are some songs you might enjoy!

Music and MLB Opening Day!

Written by

Major League Baseball opening day was yesterday (March 30th) and the Guardians opening day is Friday April 7th.

So let's talk music and baseball! We start with the Pride of Progressive Field, the beat keeper, the man to get your feet stomping, the one that kept your spirits high when the team might be down... The Legend, John Adams (1951-2023) John will always be respected and missed and quite frankly Guardians games won't be the same.

When it comes to stadium events, you NEED great music. Songs with a catchy hook, something to lift you up and keep you energized about the experience.

Could you imagine a baseball game without any music? Walk on songs for the players and of course the 7th inning stretch!

I have many favs, in fact when I ask people if they like The White Stripes, sometimes I'll get "I don't know them". YES you do... everyone has heard 'Seven Nation Army' at a sporting event at least once.

The fan favs are ‘Centerfield’ by John Fogerty, ‘Sweet Caroline’ by Neil Diamond, ‘Enter Sandman’ by Metallica  and we can’t forget ‘Take Me Out To The Ballgame’ on the organ of course.

Baseball and music go hand in hand, without those feet stomping melodies I know we would all experience a very different game.

So as we move through baseball season and you find yourself at a game, listen up and enjoy the musical addition to America’s Favorite Pastime!

Go Guardians!

Throwback Thursday - Fall Out Boy

Written by

This week for Throwback Thursday we are going to talk about Fall Out Boy... if you couldn't tell from the title.

So let's dive right in. The band got their start in 2001 in Wilmette, Il. Launching their debut album "Take This To Your Grave" however the same year they released "Evening Out With Your Girlfriend" both of these albums are very much of the times with a much more hardcore punk. The elder emo in me is screaming RAWR =]. <--- that's my old lip ring there.

As the band grew in popularity we come to their 2005 album "From Under The Cork Tree" with fan favs 'Dance, Dance' and let's not forget 'Sugar, We're Going Down'. I'll never forget the first time I saw that music video on VH1 while getting ready for school. Still holds up.

The guys kept a certain sound that is very much their sound... or should I say the melodic, powerful voice of Patrick Stump is so recognizable it is a sin to not be able to know their name if you hear his wide vocal range.

We're going to skip ahead to their comeback album "Save Rock and Roll" and a song we play on the regular on 107.3 'My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark'. Even though the band seemed to roll with the sounds of the time with the millenial clap and the sounds of trash cans being slammed, they kept it punk/emo.

This is my personal opinion... I am not huge on their club sounds in the albums between 2013-2018. That's MY opinion, I really enjoy that harder, heartbroken sad boy sound.

Now let's get into their latest album "So Much (For) Stardust" released March 24 2023. So far my favorite song on this album is 'Hold Me Like A Grudge'. The album feels like a little bit of all their sounds. Sort of pop sort of heartbroken emo kid. I can dig it. As you know we have 'Love From The Other Side' on a regular spin. They added some orchestral sounds to the album and the begining of the title track 'So Much (For) Stardust' is ear catching for sure.

Below I will share the songs I mentioned above and I would love to hear what you all think!

Thank you for reading <3  Carrie Danger
