HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARRIE DANGER

The date is April 14th, 1989. It’s just after midnight in Clarksville, Tennessee, and the earth begins to shake… the moonlit clouds seemingly part in an instant as an angel descends from Heaven. She’s in the form of a newborn baby, and she is blessed with a name… Carrie Danger.

This is my tribute to Carrie, who has taught me so much about being on air, staying true to yourself, loving life, and honestly, how to be a badass woman. I love this girl and hope she has the best day!

She won’t be on the air today as she’s taking the day off (as she should!! It’s her BDAY after all!!) so give our weekend jock, DJ Nivens a listen! He’ll be filling in for her and making sure you still get your daily dose of the DANGER ZONE at 9 PM.

But if you see Carrie around town, on social media or, as I often do, in your dreams, make sure to wish her the happiest of birthdays!

Let's Get Weird w/ Carrie Danger

Today is not only National Grilled Cheese Day but on this day in 1988 (35 years ago… I know wtf?). Alfred “Weird Al” Yankovic released his 5th album “Even Worse”.

This album featured parody hits including Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ as ‘Fat’, Tiffany’s ‘I think we’re alone now’ as ‘I think I’m a Clone Now’ and LaBamba as ‘Lasagna’.

Let’s jump in the time machine and go back to around 1997, my cousins and I (shoutout out Brett and Cody) decided to pop in a cd “Bad Hair Day” released March 12th 1996… as it began to spin in our boom box we had no idea what door we just opened into parody city. We already had a childlike sense of humor but this really took us to the next level.

To my surprise I heard a familiar sound… Coolio’s ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ but what are these lyrics? ‘Amish Paradise’..... Ironically there are plenty of Amish families nearby so it was even funnier.

Weird Al released 14 albums between 1983-2014. Among them include some memorable parodies.

His self titled debut album released in 1983 included ‘I love Rocky Road’

1984 ‘“Weird Al” Yankovic in 3-D’ featured ‘Eat It’

1985 ‘Dare to be Supid’ with ‘Like a Surgeon’

Previously mentioned 1988 ‘Even Worse’ and 1996 ‘Bad Hair Day’

2006 ‘Straight Outta Lynwood’ and ‘White & Nerdy’

I know there are so many more that I don’t have the time to go over but I hope this was a nice little funny skip down a weird memory lane.

I’m off the next two days, my blogs resume again on Monday!

Check your pie chart, take care of yourself - Carrie Danger

International Louie Louie Day

Today is International Louie Louie day and I thought it would be nice to discuss a song that we all know and I’m sure appreciate in some form!

Written by Richard Berry in 1955, it was recorded by The Pharaohs and released in 1957.

Berry’s version tells of a seaman who journeys three days to Jamaica to visit his girl. A bartender, Louie, is given the story.

Now as you know there are a TON of covers and I believe my favorites are Toots & The Maytals, Los Yesterdays, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and The Sandpipers

Below is a list of the other covers and you can choose which one is your favorite! I am sure there are more out there.

In fact my brother in law informed me that there is a version for Bernie Kosar… this is why we talk about things. To learn from others. Thanks Travis!

The Pharaohs

The Kingsmen

The Stooges

Toots & The Maytals

Los Yesterdays

The Kinks

Otis Redding

Iggy Pop

Black Flag

Motorhead

Joan Jett & The Blackhearts

Carrie Danger goes to the Home Opener

So as we know Friday was the Cleveland Guardians Home Opener against the Seattle Mariners. Before we get into the game let’s talk about the Man, the Myth, the Legend… John Adams. Cleveland’s beloved drummer!

Born in Cleveland Oct. 9 1971, John played drums in the marching and jazz band and eventually became the President of the Cleveland Blues Society.

With nearly 4,000 games under his belt, 1 team name change, 3 stadium name changes. (Indians/Guardians & Municipal Stadium/The Jake/Progressive Field)

John and his drum were witness to postseason success, World Series heartbreak and the absolutely ridiculous Ten Cent Beer Night.

In a 2002 Cleveland Magazine interview he said “I march to the beat of my own drum and I think the spirit of Cleveland is the same.”

Big shout to the one and only Tom (aka DirtyTom on Twitter, he's not dirty) for my John Adams pin!

While at the game there was a very nice tribute to John who as you know passed at the age of 71 due to health complications on Jan. 30 2023. It was a touching moment when the crowd erupted in cheers and claps for the beloved drummer who kept the heartbeat of Cleveland alive even when the game was tight or not going our way.

Now this was my first home opener at the stadium and wow what a wonderful experience! The sun was shining and the spirits were high, the energy of Cleveland fans is contagious!

We don’t need to get into the big L that was the conclusion of the game… however, the Cleveland Guardians did win the season series against the Seattle Mariners, 4-3 in a walkoff win after a grueling 12 innings of back and forth ties!

Needless to say, I am very excited about this baseball season and hitting the stadium as many times as possible!

Go Guardians!

My breakup-anthem queen Melanie Martinez is coming to Cleveland!! And all week long I have your chance to win tickets to the show!

You may be familiar with the two-toned hair singer from her humble beginnings as a contestant on The Voice in 2012. After the show aired, she was signed to Atlantic Records, and in 2014 she released her debut single, “Dollhouse” following it up with her debut studio album, “Cry Baby” which went platinum in 2015. You’ve probably heard her song “Playdate” if you were scrolling on TikTok at any point this past summer.

I’d like to thank her for that debut studio album because it has gotten me through almost every single breakup/rejection/broken heart I’ve experienced since 2015. (For those new to her music, I recommend checking out “Pacify Her” “Recess” and "DEATH”- featured below)

Her third studio album PORTALS, also the name of her tour, just dropped on March 31st. It features a song, “EVIL” which she admitted to fans on Instagram is about “dealing with a narcissist who ironically calls you evil just because you're able to see through their bullshit.” Who was she with in her last relationship you ask? Quirky alternative artist, Oliver Tree. OHHHH THE DRAMA.

If you want to win tickets to her SOLD-OUT show at Jacob’s Pavilion on July 5th, tune in all week long around 11:30 AM, I’ll be telling you the keyword you need to text!

Throwback Thursday - Yellowcard

It’s Throwback Thursday! Tonight we are going to highlight Yellowcard!

Let’s get started, the band was formed in 1997 in Jacksonville, Florida. Their first album released in 1999 ‘Where We Stand’ had a lot harder punk sound than Ocean Avenue… I was unaware of this and let’s say it was unexpected but I LOVE IT!

Heavy on the baselines and very much Florida-Punk Rock with some hints of ska. Feels like I’m about to light up with my buds on the pier.  Some favs ‘Lesson Learned’, ‘Doesn’t Matter’ and ‘Uphill Both Ways’.

Then we see a BIG shift in the band’s sound, why? Well because they fired their first vocalist Ben Dobson and hired Ryan Key who we know today as their frontman. Taking the band from hardcore-punk to pop-punk.

2001 ‘One for the Kids’ it almost sounds like they fell in love and had their heart crushed. Here we see the band still holding onto their garage band guitar riffs however much more sing songy.

2003 we were all blessed with ‘Ocean Avenue’ and at this moment I can feel myself watching Laguna Beach and listening to it over and over in my 6 disc stereo system… silver and blue.

This was right before I was set to move to Ohio away from my childhood home and friends and LET ME TELL YOU… every song was FELT. 14 year old Carrie was big sad listening to “Empty Apartment” on repeat.

I could go on and on because this band has 10 studio albums but we will close here… for now!

As you know Yellowcard is touring their 20th Anniversary of Ocean Avenue and hitting Blossom Music Center with Story of the Year and This Wild Life Wednesday July 12th!

As always, thank you for reading! -Carrie Danger

Live In Studio with Girl Cologne

Wednesday I got to sit down with up-and-coming Cleveland band, Girl Cologne. They've released two singles, “Let Me Know” and “My Baby” and hope to release their next song "Help You Help Me" (which they performed live on the air) soon. Aside from a unique punk sound, they pride themselves on a dedication to social issues that effect the queer as well as the chronically ill community (HELL YEAH). Three of the four members--Jenna, Cade, and Parker (shoutout to Em who couldn't make it as they had to work their day job -- but hopefully not for much longer)--arrived at the station bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to show off their stuff. Besides that, I just had a great time hanging with them. Check out our conversation and their live acoustic performance below.
