The Grog Shop and Hessler w/ Carrie Danger

Hey there!

So over the weekend I was able to attend ‘An Ode to Hessler’ at The Grog Shop with a friend of mine. We had no idea what we were in for.

Upon arrival we are told the vendors are downstairs along with the food. It was so great to see a few local artists and businesses there for support. You already know the first thing I did was buy a t-shirt.

Hessler Shirt

The food was great, the atmosphere was pretty chill.

Upstairs the music had started up, jam bands and great energy all around. I kept hearing “can I get a pic for the Hessler FB group?”

Thankfully, my friend knew what Hessler Road was and explained. It’s a road in Cleveland where the history is deep and the community runs deeper.

There is so much backstory for this community that I don’t even know where to begin. So here is a link to the Cleveland Historical article I found! After reading up on this it’s safe to say I want to attend the next Hessler Street Fair if we are so lucky to have another.

Overall the night was fantastic, I loved being surrounded by strangers who easily could have become friends, great music, free flow vibes and the light that comes with knowing we are all brothers and sisters trying for our best lives.

You already know… take care of yourself!

In honor of Cleveland legend, Drew Carey, turning 65 today, I’ll be playing Cleveland Rocks from The Presidents of the United States of America, which served as the theme song for The Drew Carey show from 1997 to 2004.

If you were preparing for Y2K by living under a rock, maybe you hadn’t heard of The Drew Carey Show. It was a sitcom that started airing in 1995 that was based around a fictionalized version of the actor, and set in the city we call home - Cleveland, Ohio!! Amongst other things the show was known for, it was the first ever to have a simulcast on the internet.

The song, Cleveland Rocks, was initially released by Ian Hunter in 1979, instantly becoming an anthem for the Land. In one interview, Hunter almost changed it though, stating, ‘I originally wrote “Cleveland Rocks” for Cleveland. I changed it later to “England Rocks” because I thought it should be a single somewhere and Columbia wouldn’t release it as a single in the US (too regional). “Cleveland Rocks” is Cleveland’s song and that’s the truth.’ Never underestimate the power of Northeast Ohio pride.

The version you’ve heard in The Drew Carey Show, and the one in today’s ALT REWIND is a cover from The Presidents of the United States. In that version, Drew Carey, a Cleveland native, can be heard yelling "Hey!" and then laughing in the beginning and shouting "Ohio!" at the end. For the last season of The Drew Carey Show, the theme song was performed in a different musical style in each episode.

Happy Birthday Drew Carey! Thanks for always remembering the city that raised you.

World Goth Day w/ Carrie Danger

Today is World Goth Day! Now I am not part of the Goth community however I love the look, the lifestyle, the vibe… all of it!

The Official World Goth Day site defines it as “a day where the goth scene gets to celebrate its own being, and an opportunity to make its presence known to the rest of the world.”

This day originated in the UK in 2009, a smaller scale celebration of the gothic subculture inspired from a broadcast of a special set of shows on BBC Radio 6.

UK-based Goth DJ currently known as ‘BatBoy Slim” (love that name) wrote a Myspace blog suggesting the idea. He and London-based Goth DJ “martin oldgoth” decided to take it globally.

Here we are today celebrating World Goth Day, where we can shine a black light on the culture like fashion, art exhibitions, music and more.

Just another day where we are reminded to accept those around us for exactly who they are, we are allowed self expression. That’s what gives us our individuality and uniqueness.

Don't forget The Cure will be playing Blossom Music Center Sunday June 11th! Can't wait to see you all there.

So be kind, be rad, be goth and don’t be sad!

Take care of yourself,
Love, Carrie Danger

Happy Friday everyone!

Today is National Pizza Party Day and I think it’s safe to say… just about everyone enjoys this precious cuisine. Red sauce, white sauce, pepperoni, cheese… dare I say PINEAPPLE!

This reminded me of memories from days past such as the weekly skating parties at the local skating rink.

In my home town we had Magic Wheels. It was THE SPOT. In elementary and middle school they had a challenge for us, if your class had more participants you would win a pizza party.

It was cut throat, the determination, competitive spirit of us 5th graders… it was unmatched. Who would have guessed a bunch of army brats would be highly competitive. The amount of carpool scheduling that went into making sure we could all go was a skill we would indeed use later in life.

Don’t even get me started on the slow skate drama, wipe out and “congo line” to the Quad City DJ’s ‘C’mon ‘N Ride It’. Did I just unlock a core memory for you? I hope so.

Yes I know, this Pizza Party blog quickly turned into a skate night memory… it’s okay because it’s Friday.

Anyway, enjoy some tunes that take me right back to Magic Wheels and hopefully you back to your local skating rink.

Have a great weekend and take care of yourself!

Yard Work Jamz w/ Carrie Danger

Hello all, as the weather has finally seemed to break into more steady nice weather… it’s time to get some yard work done!

So let’s talk about music that gets you stoked to mow the lawn, weed your garden or whatever is on your outside goal list.

As someone who loves to be outside either for leisure or manual labor, music is a must!

Of course I think it depends on your mood but here are a few songs that I really dig for my outside time.

P.S. Here is a friendly reminder to wear sunscreen and apply it often. Melanoma is one of the more serious cancers. So grab your super rad sun hat, put on your sunblock and keep your skin looking younger for longer and prevent melanoma.  Enjoy a photo of me after doing 5 hours of yard work last summer showing off my cool hat.

P.S.S. If you have tattoos, I’m sure you spent a lot on them, protect that investment.

Get out there and take care of yourself (skin too).
Love, Carrie Danger

Don't Believe In Ghosts and The Aquadolls!

Coming off of Blink-182, I can’t get enough of live alternative music! Yesterday we had the band Don’t Believe in Ghosts come into the studio. They traveled all the way from new york and even brought us pizza! Check our chat and their acoustic on-air performance of “Living Like This” below. We got to see them play at the Rialto Theatre in Akron last night, but you can go see them TONIGHT at The Foundry in Lakewood!

Another band that came into the studio was The Aquadolls! They are on their Spring Fling tour, making a stop at the House of Blues tonight! Opening for them is Detention, a local band you may have heard on Live & Local with Aaron Lux. We chatted about music, women in the industry, Freaky Friday, and much more. Check out our chat below and consider seeing them live TONIGHT!

Blink-182 w/ Carrie Danger

Hello all!

As you know there was a big concert at Rocket Mortgage last night. Blink-182 came to town and took all of us back to our younger years, it was incredible!

I was fortunate to be able to attend and hang out with Brady and Alyssa plus many more amazing people.

Brady CD Alyssa

Beauty School Dropout opened, sadly I didn’t see them BUT I heard they did fantastic.

Turnstile is a personal favorite of mine and of course I loved every second of their set! Sorry to those around me as I was screaming all the lyrics and living my best life.

Turnstile lights

Blink took the stage and WOW… that was an experience I am so thankful to absorb into my soul.

With 25 songs on the setlist, they played something for everyone!

Blink

They sang each song as if time was nonexistent. By the time the show was over it didn’t even occur to me that it was already 11.

At one point during the show Mark’s mom facetimed him, it was nice to enjoy that moment with him! It was also pretty rad to see Travis Barker hoisted on his platform in the air while he played!

All in all it was a fantastic experience and again, I feel so lucky to have the job I have and be able to get out there and enjoy live music as much as possible!

Rock on, soak up the live music when you can and take care of yourself!

BLINK-182 IS IN THE LAND

Blink-182 is coming to Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse TONIGHT!

They’ve made the comebacks of all comebacks, getting the original group back together. And now, we get to relive our childhoods while rocking out to some newer music as well (still waiting on that new album Travis Barker promised they’d be releasing before the tour…).

While the show has been sold out for quite a while, you can still get resale tickets here.

But as we look to see what we can expect for tonight’s show, I have been reading reviews from other cities. They were in Chicago a few weeks ago, and one concert-goer wrote that despite Blink not being “known” for their live performances, “they proved they’ve matured and grown (in some ways) sounding tighter than ever with a thrilling performance that included pyro, towering stage props, and confetti.”

I CANNOT WAIT!!!

Musical Memories w/ Carrie Danger

Today I thought I would highlight Radiohead, I listen to them often and not only that but I won’t ever forget my friend who introduced me to them outside of ‘Creep’, ‘Karma Police’ and ‘High and Dry’.

Hop in my time machine and buckle in! *time machine sounds*

2009, 20 year old Carrie is hanging out with a musician friend Dean and he made me a mix cd of songs that were great! *to the youths… burning mix cds was a really great gesture for your friends!*

Anyway, on this cd there was a great variety of songs from The Roots to NERD to Radiohead and beyond. The Radiohead song he chose was from their album ‘In Rainbows’ and the song is ‘House of Cards’. I was entranced! I was familiar with Radiohead but WOW this sent me.

I fell in love completely with the band and ate up all of their albums.

To this day, ‘In Rainbows’ is my #1 choice followed by ‘The Bends’ and ‘Kid A’

There are a lot of great things out there but I will say it’s pretty rad when someone can make that much of an impact on you through the power of music!

Thanks buddy, he is the drummer for the band Red Wanting Blue, check them out!

As always, check your pie chart, take care of yourself!
Love, Carrie Danger
